Falling into Fall
Falling into Fall: Embracing Fall with Mindfulness
As the air cools and the leaves change, fall invites us to pause and reflect on the shifts happening around us. The temperature drops, mornings become dimmer, and days are sometimes cloudier—all signs of nature slowing down. These changes can bring a sense of gloom or sadness, they also offer an opportunity for stillness and introspection.
For many, fall can be a challenging time. The reduction in sunlight can leave us feeling sluggish. But what if we looked at this season of transition as an invitation to practice mindfulness? To slow down, embrace comfort, and focus on the small, often overlooked, moments that ground us?
In my work as a therapist, I often encourage clients to see change not as something to resist but as a chance to re-center and reconnect with themselves. Below are some tips and mindfulness activities to help guide you through this season, bringing awareness and comfort to your everyday life.
A Mindful Fall: Using our Five Senses
One of the simplest and most grounding mindfulness exercises is to focus on the five senses—what we see, smell, taste, hear, and feel. By tuning in to what’s happening around us, we anchor ourselves in the present moment.
1. What You See
As the leaves change colors, take a moment to truly observe the world around you. Notice how the sky may look different, how the landscape begins to show changes in the plants, trees and grass. Perhaps you’re walking through a park, driving somewhere, or sitting near a window—pause and take in the colors of the leaves, the movement of the clouds, or even the early morning fog.
2. What You Smell
Fall carries its own set of distinct aromas. The crispness of the air, the earthy scent of fallen leaves, or even the scent of a warm beverage in hand. Try to take a deep breath the next time you step outside or brew a cup of tea. What subtle scents are you noticing? How do they change depending on your environment?
3. What You Taste
As temperatures drop, many of us crave warm, comforting foods and drinks. Whether it’s a hot cup of coffee, herbal tea, or a seasonal treat like pumpkin bread, slow down and savor each bite or sip. Pause and notice it’s texture, flavor, and feel in your mouth. How does this item feel as it touches your tongue? How does it nourish you?
4. What You Hear
There’s a certain stillness to fall that’s almost meditative. Listen closely to the rustling of leaves underfoot, the wind brushing against bare branches, or the quiet hum of your environment. Sometimes, the silence of fall mornings can be soothing, offering a break from the constant noise of our lives.
5. What You Feel
Whether you're walking down a path, sitting outside, or curled up on the couch with a blanket, take time to feel the physical sensations. How does the cool air feel against your skin? How does the warmth of a cozy sweater or blanket wrap around you?
By consciously engaging with each of your senses, you not only ground yourself in the present moment but also create an experience of comfort and connection.
Navigating Fall Transitions Intentionally
While fall brings beauty, it also reminds us that change, though inevitable, doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, it can be a time to embrace new routines that align with the season’s slower, more reflective pace. Here are a few simple fall activities that allow you to engage with the season in a mindful and joyful way:
Apple Picking: The act of walking through an apple trees, reaching up, picking fresh apples that appeal to you, and savoring the fruit’s natural sweetness is a grounding and wholesome experience. It’s an opportunity to slow down, be outside, and enjoy nature’s harvest.
Pumpkin Carving: Whether it’s a fun activity with friends or a solo creative outlet, carving pumpkins can be a soothing and meditative experience. Focus on the textures and feels as you take the insides out, notice with your eyes the patterns you’re creating, and the joy that comes with seasonal creativity. Take a chance to look at what you’ve created and the memories you made.
Raking or Blowing Leaves: As leaves pile up in the yard, consider it a chance to connect with nature through movement. Raking leaves can be an almost rhythmic activity, and afterward, you might even enjoy the childlike thrill of jumping into a freshly piled mound! When you blow the leaves around, you can even make it like a game or enjoy watching the leaves swirl and blow across your driveway or lawn.
Moving Through Change with Compassion
It’s important to acknowledge that the change of seasons can bring up emotions—sometimes sadness, anxiety, or even grief as we say goodbye to summer. If this resonates with you, know that it’s okay to feel this way. In fact, this season gives us an opportunity to be gentle with ourselves, to wrap up in cozy blankets, and to reflect on the positive moments that come with the shifting environment.
Fall is a season of slowing down and softening into ourselves. It's a time to reflect on where we are, to notice what we might need, and to take the opportunity to reconnect with our inner selves. By focusing on mindful practices, whether it's through the senses, enjoying seasonal activities, or simply acknowledging the changes around us, we can find peace and comfort during this beautiful season of transition.
Embrace the change, lean into comfort, and allow yourself to notice the small joys along the way.
